Important: If you install the 64-bit version, but want the 32-bit version instead, you must first uninstall the 64-bit version before installing the 32-bit version. The same is true if you installed the 32-bit version, but want to install the 64-bit version. If you're still not sure which version, 32-bit or 64-bit is a better choice for you, see the section below. Reasons to choose the 64-bit version Computers running 64-bit versions of Windows generally have more resources such as processing power and memory, than their 32-bit predecessors. Also, 64-bit applications can access more memory than 32-bit applications (up to 18.4 million Petabytes). Therefore, if your scenarios include large files and/or working with large data sets and your computer is running 64-bit version of Windows, 64-bit is the right choice when: • You’re working with large data sets, like enterprise-scale Excel workbooks with complex calculations, many pivot tables, data connections to external databases, Power Pivot, 3D Map, Power View, or Get & Transform. The 64-bit version of Office may perform better in these cases. • You’re working with extremely large pictures, videos, or animations in PowerPoint. The 64-bit version of Office may be better suited to handle these complex slide decks. • You’re working with files over 2 GB in Project, especially if the project has many sub-projects. • You’re developing in-house Office solutions like add-ins or document-level customization. Using the 64-bit version of Office lets you deliver a 64-bit version of those solutions as well as a 32-bit version. In-house Office solution developers should have access to the 64-bit Office 2016 for testing and updating these solutions. • You’re working with the Large Number data type in Access, and while this data type is supported by 32-bit Access, you may see unexpected results when executing code or expressions that use native 32-bit VBA libraries. 64-bit VBA provides the LongLong data type which fully supports large numbers. For more information, see. 6 Reasons Windows Beats Mac Windows 7 Has Erased Mac's Advantages. Share Pin Email Print Sean Gallup/Getty Images. Why Windows 7 Was Better than Windows Vista. Reasons to choose the 32-bit version. Note: If you have 32-bit Windows, you can only install 32-bit Office. If you have 64-bit Windows, you can install 32-bit Office or 64-bit Office. IT Professionals and developers in particular, should also review the following situations where the 32-bit version of Office is still the best choice for you or your organization. • You have 32-bit COM Add-ins with no 64-bit alternative. You can continue to run 32-bit COM add-ins in 32-bit Office on 64-bit Windows. You can also try contacting the COM Add-in vendor and requesting a 64-bit version. • You use 32-bit controls with no 64-bit alternative. You can continue to run 32-bit controls in 32-bit Office like Microsoft Windows Common Controls (Mscomctl.ocx, comctl.ocx), or any existing 3rd-party 32-bit controls. • Your VBA code uses Declare statements Most VBA code doesn’t need to change when using in 64-bit or 32-bit, unless you use Declare statements to call Windows API using 32-bit data types like long, for pointers and handles. In most cases, adding PtrSafe to the Declare and replacing long with LongPtr will make the Declare statement compatible with both 32- and 64-bit. However this might not be possible in rare cases where there is no 64-bit API to Declare. For more information about what VBA changes are needed to make it run on 64-bit Office, see. • You have 32-bit MAPI applications for Outlook. With a growing number of 64-bit Outlook customers, rebuilding 32-bit MAPI applications, add-ins, or macros for 64-bit Outlook is the recommended option, but if needed you can continue to run them with 32-bit Outlook only, as well. To learn about preparing Outlook applications for both 32-bit and 64-bit platforms, see and the. • You’re activating a 32-bit OLE server or object. You can continue to run your 32-bit OLE Server application with a 32-bit version of Office installed. • You're using SharePoint Server 2010 and you need the Edit in Datasheet view. You can continue to use the Edit in Datasheet view functionality in SharePoint Server 2010 with 32-bit Office. • You need 32-bit Microsoft Access.mde,.ade, and.accde database files. While you can recompile 32-bit.mde,.ade, and.accde files to make them 64-bit compatible, you can continue to run 32-bit.mde,.ade, and.accde files in 32-bit Access. • You require Legacy Equation Editor or WLL (Word Add-in libraries) files in Word. You can continue to use Legacy Word Equation Editor and run WLL files in 32-bit Word. • You have an old embedded media file in your PowerPoint presentation with no available 64-bit codec.

Put to the test: 9 products for home users, 4 solutions for business users The laboratory of AV-TEST examined a total of 13 products under MacOS Sierra. The first 9 on the list are for home users: Avast Security 12.9 Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac 6.1 Comodo Antivirus 2.2 F-Secure Safe 17.0 Intego Mac Internet Security X9 10.9 Kaspersky Lab Internet Security for Mac 18.0 Sophos Home 1.2 Symantec Norton Security 7.5 Trend Micro Antivirus 8.0 4 solutions for business users ESET Endpoint Security 6.5 McAfee Endpoint Security for Mac 10.2 SentinelOne Next Generation Endpoint Security Software 2.0 Sophos Central Endpoint 9.6 All versions were evaluated under identical iMacs running on MacOS Sierra 10.12.6. The solutions were installed in the test as additional protection for MacOS Sierra. Click Allow next to System software from developer 'ESET, spol. Was blocked from loading. Allow button is disabled In some cases, the Allow button might be disabled. None of the security packages switched off the internal protection functions of MacOS Sierra. High detection rates for many security packages In the test involving packages for home users, a total of 6 out of 9 packages detected the 514 selected MacOS attackers: Avast, Bitdefender, Kaspersky Lab, Sophos, Symantec and Trend Micro. Intego overlooked a few malware samples, yet still attained a good 99.4 percent. F-Secure delivered a somewhat weaker performance with 93.8 percent. The security package from Comodo only detected an unacceptable 38.1 percent. Among the solutions for corporate users, the products from ESET, SentinelOne and Sophos detected all attackers 100 percent. Endpoint Security from McAfee experienced a minor detection error: 99.6 percent. In an additional test, the detection performance of Windows files was also evaluated. While these are innocuous on a Mac, in a mixed network, malware could thus hide on a Mac – especially when it is used as a server. For consumer users, the packages from Bitdefender, Kaspersky Lab and Trend Micro demonstrated superb detection rates between 99 and 100 percent. Likewise, high detection rates among corporate solutions were reached by ESET, McAfee and Sophos. Lots of protection with a low system load In the past, many Mac security packages demonstrated a conspicuously high system load. The fact that those days are now over can be seen in the test segment on speed. In evaluating this criterion, the testers copied a selection of files on a reference system encompassing a volume of 27.28 GB, clocking the time necessary for the operation. In addition, various downloads were performed, and these times were also recorded. On the reference system, the copying took 147 seconds, and the downloads lasted 56 seconds. The exactly identical copying procedure and the same downloads were then repeated with each security solution installed, and the times were measured. Using this method, it quickly becomes apparent which antivirus solution requires too many resources in everyday use, thereby slowing down a Mac system. System load on products for home users The security packages for consumer users from Kaspersky Lab, Trend Micro and Symantec added a load of a mere 1 to 2 additional seconds when copying and downloading. Those levels are actually unnoticeable in everyday use. Over the past 14 or so months Microsoft has made numerous incremental changes to the app, adding or updating features and making the app more versatile and, perhaps, making it a better note taking choice than the everpresent. Whether OneNote is suitable as an Evernote replacement for you will depend largely on what you use Evernote for. For me, as I’ve used OneNote over the past year, I find it to be the tool that best suits my needs. And I say this after attempting to use Evernote (in stops and starts) many times since I first the original iOS version of the app several years ago. But, mind you, I have very specific note taking needs. I’m using it to create large text documents with disparte but linked bits of information that I want to be easily shared and simple to navigate. I don’t use many media files and I’m not “collecting” information, which is something Evernote excels at. For me, OneNote, while imperfect, is a perfect solution. Organizational genius: OneNote isn’t perfect, but it offers powerful tools for creating sophisticated, interlinked documents. OneNote is still free, so, while it comes as a part of, you don’t need Office 2016 or an Office 365 subscription to use the app. But you do need a account in order to save documents, as there is still no way to use a file saved locally on your Mac. Fortunately, Microsoft still offers free OneDrive accounts with 25GB of storage. If you’re frustrated by Microsoft OneNote for Mac, we’ve taken a look at the very best OneNote alternatives for Mac in 2018. The Mac version of OneNote isn’t as complete as the PC version with several features missing compared to Windows. Documents created using OneNote can be shared with and edited by anyone, whether they have the app or not, as it offers not only apps for Mac and iOS, but a perfectly serviceable that supports most everything you can do with your Mac. Looks the same, but it’s different The app doesn’t look any different than did last year’s version, but there have been some tweaks to the way it works. Each OneNote document consists of a series of tabs, referred to as sections, and each section can have an unlimited number of pages. Pages within a section are what you use to organize your information. And each page allows you to enter information a freeform fashion, which is to say that you can click anywhere and just start typing. Your freeform typing is added to a text box that, once you enter text, can be rearranged, formatted, and organized on a page. An update to the app now allows you to drag files from the Finder to add them to the document, with some limitations. PDF files, Office documents, text files, and images can all be added to OneNote pages with a drag and drop. One of the things that makes OneNote excellent is the option it offers for linking to both internal and external references. As you might expect it’s easy to add links to web sites by adding a hyperlink to a page, but what I find most beneficial is how you can link other pages within any current Notebooks or to Pages that are part of completely different Notebooks. This kind of Notebook linking capability allows you to create highly sophisticated documents that have both internal and external references OneNote is not perfect. It still lags behind the Windows versions with relation to features and capabilities. For example, in the Windows version of OneNote you can add an Excel document to a page, open the document, make changes to the spreadsheet, save it, and see those changes reflected in OneNote. If you open the same Notebook in OneNote for Mac you can see the same information, but you can only open a read-only copy of the Excel document. Likewise, I can add an Excel document to a OneNote Mac Notebook by dragging it from the Finder, but once it’s part of OneNote it’s not editable. Stationary Pad is a long-standing feature of the Mac operating system that few people are aware of and use. Reader Jake Tesler points is out and wants to know what it does: Can you tell me what “stationery pad” does? It’s that little checkbox in a Finder’s Get Info window. I’ve always been curious, but I can’t figure it out. The Stationery Pad feature has been around for years. Helpful though it can be, very few people use it. The first Stationery Pack is for Mac users who want to create sophisticated emails; Stationery Pack 2 is for users with high standards in email design and technology; plus there are theme-specific Stationery Collections like Season's Greetings Vol. 1 & 2, Summer Spirit Cards or Love & Romance for Valentine's Day. And that’s too bad. It’s a way of creating a template document. For example, create a blank TextEdit document, save it to the desktop, select it, press Command-I, and enable the Stationery Pad option. Double-click on that document and you generate a copy of it, complete with all of the original document’s content. The original file remains untouched. You can do it with any file type but, of course, it’s not useful for all files. For example, it doesn’t do you a lot of good to save most image and movie files as stationery pads. Indie games — those created by independent developers without the backing of a major corporate publisher — don’t have this problem. In recent years, many indie games have managed to surpass their AAA competition in terms of quality, and the notion that indie games are somehow “lesser” because of their lower budget is not accurate. In fact, if you ignore indie games, you’re missing out on some of the best video games of all time. Here are the 25 best indie games you should be playing right now. Action ‘Dead Cells’ ‘ melting pot of ideas makes it hard to pigeon hole into a single genre. On the one hand, it’s very much a Metroidvania, but it’s also a rouge-lite in the tradition of Rogue Legacy, it’s randomization making it exciting each time you enter its nostalgic spin on 16-bit visuals. And, yes, it’s challenging in a way that draws comparisons to Dark Souls (even its title harks back to the de facto “difficult” series). Dead Cells breaks up its 2D levels into zones much like a Metroid or Castlevania game, though its combat requires precision and forces you to adapt, like the aforementioned Dark Souls. You collect enemy blueprints, upgrades, weapons, and items throughout the game, all of which can be given for safe keeping to the collector, a strange old man. The crux of Dead Cells‘ progression system sees you pushing through levels and delivering useful items to the collector before you die and have to star anew. Your upgrades and available items will also make each run unique, given you’ll have more tools at your disposal. Satisfying combat and an addictive loot system make Dead Cells one of the best Metroidvania/rogue-lite games in years. Dead Cells is available on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC. Read our ‘Hyper Light Drifter’ The first emotion one is likely to feel in Hyper Light Drifter is unease. Following a wordless, nightmarish opening cutscene, the game drops players in a ruined world with nothing but a sword, a gun, and their wits to get. The world of Hyper Light Drifter is gorgeous, painted in neon hues and augmented by a melancholy soundtrack. Behind that beauty lurks danger, however. The game is very difficult, throwing hordes of enemies at players, who must use careful timing to dodge attacks and strike back. Hyper Light Drifter is available on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and iOS. ‘Cuphead’ StudioMDHR’s Cuphead is one of the most visually enticing games we’ve ever played. Styled after 1930s cartoons, StudioMDHR’s long-awaited debut simply looks like a dream in motion. Cuphead and his brother Mugman enter into a dubious agreement with the Devil and wind up having to battle their way through Inkwell Isle for their souls. Cuphead is not for the faint of heart. Each of the game’s bosses test your platforming and shooting skills. Not satisfied being just a boss rush gauntlet, Cuphead also has run and gun stages, each of which is harder than the last. Cuphead‘s challenging gameplay is rewarding, but its visual and audio design steal the show. The bosses, from Beppi the Clown to Wally Warbles to King Dice, all are rendered in stunning detail. The animations pop and the jazzy sound crackles, fizzes, and pops. Cuphead feels like you’re playing an old cartoon, and an incredibly well-made one at that. Cuphead is available on Xbox One and PC. ‘Enter the Gungeon’ Enter the Gungeon is a top-down rogue-like similar to The Binding of Isaac, only with a much faster pace. The loot-driven loop tasks you with picking between one of four characters to send through a dizzying number of dungeon rooms. You have to contend with both shooting quickly and dodging, as the dodge roll mechanic is an integral part of the gameplay. When you die, you go back to the beginning, but this rogue-like retains its rooms through each run. The challenge comes from the fact that room locations, treasure, and enemies change each time you start over again. With more than 300 unique weapons and items to uncover and four unique adventurers to play as, Enter the Gungeon is a game you’ll want to keep playing even after you’ve eventually seen the credits roll. You can also play co-op with a friend, which doesn’t necessarily make the game easier, but it does up the wonderful chaos. Enter the Gungeon is available on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC. |
